real food & balanced natural living for moms

About

Hi! Welcome to my corner.

I’m Rachel, a twenty-something mom and wife whose life has taken me everywhere I didn’t expect to be. Right after we were married, my sweetheart Ryan was diagnosed with ALS, a debilitating terminal illness with no cure and no medical treatment options.

Since modern medicine couldn’t offer much help, I turned to natural sources and read everything I could to support him. That’s how I learned about the toxins all around us that are slowing us down and making us sick. Yikes! Becoming a mom made me even more aware of the products we were using and the things we were eating.

We started making little changes and we’ve been amazed by what we have learned. I’m here to share what we have done to gradually move to a more natural, less-toxic lifestyle on a budget (let’s be real, non-toxic products can be expensive), and without sacrificing delicious food and good quality products. Beginning the journey to natural living can be overwhelming so I want to help make it more approachable.

Ryan has always been a huge eater and I love to create yummy food so we make a perfect pair. I’ve found a passion for adjusting our favorite recipes to make them more nutrient dense and avoiding processed sugars, oils, and chemicals.

As we began to discover more about Ryan’s illness, we learned that he needed to make huge changes to his diet due to gluten and dairy sensitivities. Because of that, many of my recipes are gluten and dairy free. However, I believe whole grains (including wheat) and dairy can be part of a healthy balanced diet and I like to include them in some of my recipes.

Becoming a mom and a caregiver has helped me focus on the things that matter most in life. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and I’m so grateful for the peace and direction that brings me and my family. You can learn more about my faith by messaging me or by going to churchofjesuschrist.org.

I have a degree in Human Development and Family Studies and I draw from that as I focus my blog on moms during pregnancy and postpartum. I love babies and have found a lot of joy helping others with pregnancy and postpartum health.

The name Fresh Cut Basil came to me as I was snipping off some basil leaves for dinner from my hydroponic herb garden. The leaves were deep green and the smell was fresh and invigorating. I thought that was a good representation of how we’ve been trying to shape our home. My goal is to be a resource for other young mothers who want to learn to build a vibrant life that’s just a little more natural.
